What to Do When Good Plumbing Goes Bad

Plumbing Problems

Plugged drains and backed up toilets can be nightmares. They are almost as frustrating as locating a plumber who can fix the problem. Plumbing problems don’t typically arise overnight, though. Keeping an eye out for common signs can prevent a little problem from becoming a big mess.

Slow Flow

Slow drainage in any sink, shower or tub is indicative of a clog somewhere down the pipe. If the water eventually goes down, it means the clog has not yet become a full blockage. This is something the average person can fix.

Sometime pouring pots of boiling water is enough to dislodge the clog and send the water flowing again. There are also chemicals designed to dissolve the clog that work well. If neither technique resolves the issue, it may be time to call in a plumber because ignoring it won’t fix it.

Toilet Troubles

Everyone winds up at some point taking plunger action on a toilet. If such action becomes a regular occurrence, there may be a deeper underlying issue.

Plugged toilets are often caused by full septic tanks, tree roots in the system, or just the poor drain design of the toilet. And it then doesn’t take long for the problem to escalate. A qualified plumber should be able to pinpoint the root cause and determine a solution.

Drip, Drip

Low water pressure can also be a sign of plumbing issues. Leaks or piping that is too small for the demand are common household problems. Hard water can also gum up pipes – like cholesterol in our veins – making it nearly impossible for water to get through.

Sound and Smells of Drains

Gurgling drains are not a good omen. This symptom typically means there is a block somewhere along the pipe. Air gets trapped inside. The air has to be released before the water can drain causing the unmistakable gurgle sound.

An empty P-trap is usually the cause of a smelly drain. The P-trap is supposed to hold a small amount of water. This prevents any sewer smells from creeping back into the house. Adding water usually solves the problem.

Plumbing issues can get complicated pretty quickly if simply ignored. Being able to spot minor problems before they grow into larger ones will save both time and money. And when resolution is beyond your skill level, take the plunge and call a plumber.
