changing out bathroom sink faucet?

I want to change out my bathroom sink faucet. It has two twist handles 12″ apart. When I check out the faucets at homedepot website, all I see are 8″ widespread models. Is that going to fit my sink? Is 8″ the max?
Also, If I get a new one with lever handles instead of twist handles, will it make any difference in installation?

you have the old style faucets where you have one for cold and one for hot correct? they do sell a fix for this, however it is very hard to find. this website has a search option where you can search for wider spread faucets
